One of the first things you will want to do when you get to L.A. is decorate your apartment, buy a bed and furniture, get kitchen supplies, etc. So we’ve compiled a list of places where you can look to find all the things you need for your apartment or house.

Target stores carry all different things: Clothing, shoes, health and beauty products, electronics, bedding, kitchen supplies, sporting goods, toys, pet supplies, automotive supplies, and hardware supplies. Most items are relatively cheap and good quality – especially their “RE” (Room Essentials) brand which is made especially for college students. You can find inventory and locations on their website.

As many people all the around world know, IKEA is a home furnishing store that provides furniture and home decoration at pretty reasonable prices. Most of the furniture you have to put together yourself (which is what keeps the price low). But it is fairly simple to do because usually it comes with instructions. You can shop online at Ikea and request delivery to your apartment (it can be a little pricey to have it delivered so try to order as many things as you need at one time, if possible to reduce the delivery costs) -- or you can visit their stores in Carson, CA or in Burbank, CA. Each store is about a 30-45 minute drive from UCLA so if you don’t have a car you’ll need to rent one for the day.

You can buy and sell many different items on, but please be careful. This is the first place that many Americans look when they are searching for used / second-hand items. However, we STRONGLY recommend that you always see the item before purchasing, and never give your personal information like credit card numbers or your Social Security Number to any individual online. Also, make sure you buy from local sellers; it is very easy to be scammed if you buy from non-local sellers. It is expected, unlike in many other places in America, that negotiation is expected, except when a prices says “FIRM” next to it, that means it is non-negotiable.

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace lets you buy, rent, ask, sell, give away, or search for anything you want. Marketplace makes it easy to see what your friends have posted and what is available in the Los Angeles area. If you have a profile on Facebook you can use the marketplace.

Freecycle's mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saving precious resources: it eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of the larger community. You can become a member of the freecycle group in your neighborhood and receive and give away free things.

Walmart is a place for anything and everything. They sell furniture, bedding, towels, soap, food, clothing, electronics, etc. Usually prices are lower than in any other stores but the closest store is about 15 miles away so you’ll need a car to get there. For most items, Walmart can provide shipping to your home for products purchased online. You can see their inventory, locations and delivery information on their website.
