The Out of Country status allows J-1 program sponsors to keep the SEVIS record active for Exchange Visitors in the Research Scholar or Professor categories, while they temporarily engage in activities outside of the U.S. and have plans to return to the U.S. in J-1 status. Such status should be placed on their SEVIS record if they will be outside of the U.S. for more than 30 days during a single trip. Exchange Visitors may qualify for Out-of-Country status if the following requirements are met:
- They maintain their UCLA appointment.
- They continue program activity while abroad.
- The activity outside of the country will not delay the completion of program.
- They maintain health insurance for themselves and any dependents on J-2 Status.
- The Out-of-Country time period must not exceed 6 months.
Submit the request form through the MyBruin International Portal and upload a letter from your Faculty Supervisor on UCLA letterhead explaining the purpose of your time abroad. Processing time is 10 business days. You will be notified by email when the Out-of-Country status has been approved and processed in SEVIS.
