What is Envelope?
Envelope is an Art & Writing Magazine featuring creative work from UCLA's International Student, Scholar, Faculty, and Staff community. When you open Envelope, you find poems, creative fiction, opinion pieces, digital art, drawings, paintings, photography, etc. The hope for this magazine is that it provides a platform for international students, scholars, faculty, and staff, both at UCLA and UCLA Extension to share their unique perspectives with the extended campus community and beyond.

Envelope Magazine Submission Guidelines:
- Who is eligible to participate? Anyone who identifies with the UCLA International community (students, staff, faculty, scholars) both at UCLA and UCLA Extension, is welcome to submit work for consideration. We encourage you to submit the art and writing you feel most proud of and which meets the criteria listed here.
- What is theme for the 2026 Envelope volume?The theme is "Finding Belonging. "We encourage all artists to explore what "Finding Belonging" means to them - at UCLA, in the city/country they call home, in the US, in their communities, etc. All submissions must include an explanation as to how the art relates to the theme

How many pieces of work can each artist submit? Each person can submit up to 2 entries. Please submit the submission form once per work.

What types of Writing pieces are eligible for submission? Writing can include fiction, non-fiction, opinion, poetry, humor, etc. (1000 word limit). Writings in any language are encouraged and should also include an English translation.

What types of Art pieces are eligible for submission? Art can include photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, illustration, cartoons, digital designs, etc. Please submit a high resolution image of your art.

Is art made with AI allowed?At this time, we are not accepting any art made in part or in full through any AI program. All art should be original works created by the person submitting the work.
Envelope Magazine FAQs:
- Who oversees Envelope? The editorial team consists of both professional and student staff from the UCLA Dashew Center and UCLA Case Management.
- When are Envelope submissions due? The submission deadline is 11:59 PM PT on April 12th, 2026.
- What is the timeline for Envelope? Submissions will be reviewed by the editorial team soon after the deadline has passed. Selected artists will be notified before the end of the Spring 2026 quarter. The expected publication date of the magazine is the start of the Fall 2026 quarter

Will the art be displayed anywhere else other than in Envelope Magazine? Yes, the selected artworks may be enlarged and printed to be displayed at Dashew Center events (ex: World Cafe, International Education Week, etc.) Some works may also be on display in the Dashew Center office. Past art is often used on marketing flyers and graphics to advertise for future editions of Envelope as well.

All required areas of the submission form must be fully complete in order to be considered for inclusion in the magazine.

Art must fall under the theme chosen for 2026. Participants will be required on the submission form to explain how their work fits that theme.

Submitted works should refrain from content that perpetuates harmful stereotypes or negative caricatures of any culture, gender, or identity. The editorial team will not accept submissions that contain any form of direct discriminatory or racist connotation.

The Envelope editorial team will strive to cultivate a safe and empowering space for UCLA’s international students, scholars, faculty, and staff to express their unique voices in Envelope magazine. The team will work in as un-biased a fashion as possible throughout the selection process, and reserves final decision-making rights on submissions.

Submissions may not all be accepted, and final decisions will be up to the discretion of the editorial team.

By submitting your artwork through the submission form, you are giving the UCLA Dashew Center permission to use your artwork for promotional purposes. You also confirm that you own the art and it is your original work.
